Planting and care instructions.
The most important point is to plant the plugs out as soon as possible. The packaging we send the plants to you in is designed to get them to you in top condition without physical damage. However it is not designed to keep plants in. If you cannot plant within 1 day please open the packaging and prop it up so the plants are sitting upright. Trickle water in as required to keep them fresh. Do not close the lid of the packaging again.
Water well immediately prior to planting. Try to make a hole that the plug will fit into neatly. The soil immediately around the plug should not be compacted in order that the plant can root out with ease. Keep the plants watered whilst they establish.
If you are planting into grass mow it down prior to planting to at least 5cm (2”), remove clipping and scarify well. Competition from existing grass can be reduced by introducing Yellow Rattle seeds (Rhinanthus minor) , try Emorsgate seeds at www.wildseed.co.uk.
Maintenance can be as required but we recommend mowing down at least once a year in the Autumn to keep the area managed. If you would like an ‘instant’ wildflower patch this Spring/Summer over sow the area with a cornfield annual mix. This will give a display this year whilst you perennial wildflowers are establishing. If you want to restrict the cornfield annuals for subsequent years, cut them down before they run to seed.
